Fanwork Recommendations

This is where you can find my fanwork recs, mainly for fanfic. They are sorted by fandom – crossovers are mentioned twice – and I’ll explain why I rec the work. The fandoms:
Dark Angel Doctor Who & Torchwood From Eroica With Love Harry Potter
Merlin (BBC) Original Supernatural

Dark Angel
Agents of Fortune

Author: Karasu and Kouri
Fandoms: Supernatural &
Dark Angel
Status: WIP
This fanfic is one of my favourite crossovers. The story takes place before the first season of Supernatural, and the timeline of Dark Angel has been adapted accordingly.
The summary: Dean’s DNA was used by Manticore to create transgenics. Now the organisation is after Sam as well, who is studying at Stanford. To get to him they abduct Dean and replace him with X5-494, but they didn’t count on the fact that the Winchesters are hard to deceive.
The authors create a wonderfully dysfunctional Winchester family dynamic you just have to fall in love with, and their characterisation of Alec and the effect his life at Manticore had on him are depicted very realistically.

World Behind Windows

Author: spastic_visions
Fandoms: Supernatural &
Dark Angel
Status: complete
This isn’t really a crossover of two fandoms, but one of three. The plot was taken from the TV series Life on Mars and tweaked a bit to match the other two fandoms. The story goes as follows: Logan was shot in the pilot episode and fell into a coma. But then he suddenly wakes up in 2009. His job: Find Sam Winchester. And so he tags along with Dean, hoping that in the end, he’ll be back home.
I rec the story because I think it worked remarkably well to fuse the different universes into one. And the plot is interesting and well executed. The sequel is quite good as well.

Doctor Who & Torchwood
A Matter of Time

Author: demotu
Status: complete
One of the best Torchwood fanfics out there. Ianto is transported to the 51st century by accident and meets a young Jack who is very different from the one he left behind in the 21st century. And this Jack promises to help him return to his own time, but first they have to survive.
I recommend this story because it deals with the effects of time travel and eternal life on humans. The author characterises all three Jack very well. They are obviously the same person, but in very different times of their lives, and they are all incredibly interesting personalities.

Kingdom of Air

Author: lookninjas
Status: complete
This fanfic is essentially about the trip to the Himalayas that Harold Saxon arranged for the personnel of Torchwood Three after Jack left them in order to travel with the Doctor.
The focus of this story in on Ianto, who becomes the new leader of the team, due to unforeseen circumstances and coincidence, while they have to battle the height and their co-travellers. But of course, the other team members have their share of the spotlight as well, while the world around them threatens to fall apart.
The greatest strength of this story is however the author’s love for details and her research, through which the Himalayas and the dangers of the voyage come to life.

The Night Starts Here

Author: Asrai
Status: complete
At the end of the first season, Jack leaves Torchwood to travel with the doctor and leaves his friends behind. Since Torchwood Two has problems, one of them has to temporarily work there, and Ianto volunteers. From then on he spends his time tidying up after his excentric boss and fighting boredom in Scotland. He tries hard not to miss Jack and fails, of course.
Asrai’s Ianto is simply wonderful, and Steve, the boss of Torchwood Two, is an adorable excentric who you just have to love.

Peripeteia

Author: rheasilvia
Status: complete
Peripeteia is my favourite fanfic for this admittedly rather small fandom. It’s long, complete, very slashy and above all incredibly IC, as far as I can tell. Klaus is still his prickly self and Dorian is just as self-centered as he is in the manga.
Klaus especially gains a lot of depth in this story, something he’s lacking in many other stories, because this one takes place at his home and includes characters from his past. And for a change, he and Dorian don’t meet because of his NATO work. Instead, Dorian wants to steal a painting owned by the von dem Eberbachs and Klaus was invited to the wedding of a relative. Of course, nothing goes as planned.
Another plus of the story: The rare bits of German are actually correct.

Below the Belt

Author: anguis_1
Status: complete
This fanfic was written for hp_beholder, a community that focusses on the more unpopular characters in Harry Potter. The story is about an adult Dudley Dursley, who is looking for Harry and ends up meeting Millicent Bulstrode. Dudley works as a consultant who tells shop owners how to best display their merchandise, while Millicent owns an unsuccessful sex shop. They are perfect for each other.
I rec this story because of the characterisation, which is far away from being standard and awesome. Both have their faults, both aren’t conventionally attractive, but this only makes them so much more sympathetic that Harry or Ginny. I am also not a big het fan in this particular fandom, but in the case of Below the Belt, it was love on first sight.
I also recommend There Are Days I Wish I Lived in a Romance Novel (But This Isn’t One of Them) by the same author, but with the pairing Neville/Millicent.

Merlin (BBC)
Drastically Redefining
Protocol

Author: rageprufrock
Status: complete
It really is embarrassing how much I love this story, even though Merlin is slightly OOC. But of course there’s the author’s incredible sense of humour and her adorable characterisation of the characters that more than makes up for it.
Drastically Redefining Protocol is an AU in which Arthur is the Prince of Wales and Merlin a trainee at a hospital. They meet in a supply closet while Arthur is on the run from his employees and Merlin is trying to smoke cigarettes in peace. And because Merlin is Merlin, he promptly insults the prince.
This is also more than just a fanfic, it’s a multimedia project. There’s a trailer that you should watch before you start reading, and a lot of manips illustrate the articles in the press that are part of the story.

We’re A Storm In Somebody Else’s Teacup

Author: paperclipbitch
Status: complete
“Merlin meets Morgana Le Fay at a support group for People With Freaky Unnatural Powers. Alright, it’s not technically called that, but it might as well be. It’s all Gwen’s fault.” And so begins this Merlin-AU, that takes place in modern times. The rest of the story is in a similar style.
This is also a Merlin/Arthur slash story. Both are well written, but they are not the reason why I rec this story. The story’s highlight is, at least in my opinion, Morgana, whose ability as a seer is central to the plot and who has by far the most interesting character development.
As it turns out, the member of the support group are everything but harmless, and Morgana and Merlin are the only ones who can stop them.

Captive Prince

Author: freece
Status: WIP
Captive Prince starts more or less like every other slash story about slaves: Damen, the prince of his kingdom, becomes a slave and is given to the prince of another country after the death of his father because of his brother’s betrayal. But Damen is everything but meek and Laurent is not only an enigma, he also has to solve his own problems, which Damen only slowly realises.
And even if the story starts as a cliché, it doesn’t stay one for long. Damen and Laurent learn to respect and even like each other, and since the story is barely half finished, I think it can only become better.

And I Wake Up Blind, Like My Dreams Were Too Bright

Author: strangeandcharm
Status: complete
In theory, this is a Dean/Castiel story, but generally speaking, the pairing is rather unimportant because Dean doesn’t show up until the end of the story, so there’s not much interaction between the two. Moreover, the story is told from Jimmy’s point of view.
After the end of the fourth season, Castiel is hurt. Because of this, Jimmy wakes up from his dreams and is left with a rather difficult task: he has to convince an angel who suffers from amnesia that he is not just the symptom of schizophrenia. Of course it doesn’t really help that they’re in an asylum.
Jimmy’s characterisation is spot on and since there aren’t many stories about him, I think this one deserves a recommendation.

A Charming Man

Vidder: giandujakiss
Song: The Wondersmith
and His Sons
Artist: Astronautalis
This vid is simply perfect. The chosen song fits great, which is rarely the case with Supernatural vids. The cuts are well executed, and giandujakiss chose the scenes with her usual care. The combination of lyrics and video is stunning.
I haven’t seen many vids that manage to capture the essence of the fourth season of Supernatural this well. The vidder puts much emphasis on the tragic element that characterises her three protagonists and what happens to them seems to be inevitable destiny. Sometimes you can catch a glimpse of what season five might look like.

Not the Only Man She Sees

Author: ponderosa121 and blue_soaring
Status: complete
This is the third story in the Ordeals-Verse, and in my opinion the one most worth reading. Sam and Dean have to save Dean’s life, because he became pregnant under mysterious circumstances. Their only lead is an institution for couples counselling, which forces Dean to crossdress because of his condition.
Just like its prequels, A Nice Day to Start Again and He Ain’t No Prince, Not the Only Man She Sees is quite cracky, and it’s very obvious that the authors have a lot of fun torturing Dean with a cursed wedding dress, a toad and now an unexpected pregnancy. The stories are also rather pre-slashy, but even non-Wincest fans will enjoy it.
The strength of these stories is that Dean remains in character during all of this, at least in my opinion. So this makes Not the Only Man She Sees one of the few really good mpreg stories out there.
